Cottage backup power in Ontario

Rural Ontario lines can stay down for days after an ice storm or summer windstorm, and many cottages depend on a well pump, a fridge full of food and a sump or septic pump. Here’s how to plan backup power that actually fits a cottage — and the limits of portable gear.

Quick answer

For a typical cottage, a 3,000–4,000W inverter generator covers a fridge, lights, Wi-Fi and a 120V pump. Dual-fuel is handy because many cottages already have propane. A power station covers quiet nights, phones and lights. Check your well pump first: many deep-well pumps run on 240V, which the 120V portable generators below can’t power.

Step 1: Check your well pump

Look at the pump’s nameplate or the pressure switch box. A shallow-well jet pump is often 120V; a submersible deep-well pump is often 240V. A 1/2 hp pump needs roughly 1,000 running watts and 2,000+ starting watts. If it’s 240V, you need a generator with a 240V outlet and a properly installed connection — talk to a licensed electrician. Pumps are usually hardwired, so see how to connect a generator safely in Ontario.

Step 2: Pick your fuel

Propane / dual-fuel

  • Doesn’t go stale like gasoline
  • Many cottages already have cylinders
  • Slightly lower power output than gas
  • Cylinders stay outside, upright

Gasoline

  • Easy to buy — until stations lose power
  • Goes stale in a few months without stabilizer
  • Needs approved cans, stored away from the cottage
  • Drain or stabilize before leaving for the season

All 120V inverter generators — fine for 120V pumps, fridges and electronics, not 240V well pumps.

Cottage safety and practical notes

Placement. Run generators outdoors on level ground, at least 6 metres (20 feet) from windows, doors and vents — not in a boathouse, bunkie or shed. Keep CO alarms in the cottage and bunkie.

Theft. Chain the generator to something solid when you’re away, or store it locked up between visits.

Off-season. Run the generator for 15–20 minutes every month or two, or drain the fuel before closing up. Store power stations indoors and top them up before you leave.

Water and food. If the well pump is out, keep a few jugs of water on hand. A cooler and ice bought before a storm buys you time.

FAQ

Can a portable generator run my cottage well pump?

Often, if the pump is 120V and the generator has enough starting watts. Many deep-well pumps run on 240V, which 120V-only portable generators can’t power. Check the pump nameplate and use a properly installed connection.

Is propane or gas better for a cottage generator?

Propane is often better at a cottage because it doesn’t go stale and many cottages already have cylinders. Expect slightly less power on propane, and keep cylinders outside and upright.

Can a power station replace a generator at the cottage?

For lights, phones, Wi-Fi and a CPAP, yes. For a well pump or a fridge over several days, most portable power stations are too small unless you add a lot of battery and solar.
