Talk to your provider. This is general information, not medical advice. Ask your doctor, respiratory therapist or equipment supplier about your machine’s power needs and what to do if backup power runs out.
Quick answer
Most CPAPs draw about 30–60 watts without the heated humidifier. Over an 8-hour night that’s about 240–480Wh. A ~300Wh station covers about one night at the low end; a ~1 kWh station covers several nights. Turning off the humidifier and heated tube makes the biggest difference.
Estimate your nightly use
- Find your machine’s typical power use in the manual or on the manufacturer’s site (not just the power supply rating, which is a maximum).
- Multiply by hours of sleep. Example: 40 W × 8 hours = 320Wh.
- Divide the station’s capacity by about 1.2 to allow for conversion losses. A 292Wh station gives roughly 240Wh of usable power.
| CPAP setup | Typical draw | ~300Wh station (est.) | ~1 kWh station (est.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| No humidifier, DC adapter | 30–40 W | about 6–8 hours | about 3 nights |
| No humidifier, AC outlet | 40–60 W | about 4–6 hours | about 2–3 nights |
| With heated humidifier | 60–100+ W | about 2–4 hours | about 1–1.5 nights |
Estimates only. Using your CPAP maker’s DC power cord from the station’s 12V outlet avoids inverter losses and stretches runtime.

CPAP outage tips
Keep it charged. Top up the station every month or two and before storm warnings.
Have a plan B. If an outage looks long, know where you can recharge — a friend’s home, a warming centre or a car charger.
Never use a generator indoors to run medical equipment. A power station is the safe indoor option.
FAQ
How long will a power station run a CPAP?
It depends on your machine and settings. Without the humidifier, most CPAPs draw about 30–60 watts, so a ~300Wh station runs about 4–8 hours and a ~1 kWh station runs about 2–3 nights.
Should I turn off the CPAP humidifier during an outage?
If you can tolerate it, yes. The heated humidifier and heated tube can double or triple power use. Ask your provider whether it is OK for you to sleep without it.
Can I run my CPAP from a generator?
Yes, from an inverter generator running outdoors with a proper extension cord, but never run a generator indoors. For bedside use, a battery power station is quieter and safer.
